Bella, our beloved 16 year old Russian Blue cat, recently passed away. She was a gentle and loving soul who was (is) a cherished companion.

When she had finally turned the corner and we knew she would not be much longer for our world, I spent as much time as I could with her in those final days. She didn't have the strength to jump up onto her usual sleeping spots, so we made her a little bed with her favorite blanket and placed it by the radiator for warmth and nearness to our own bed.

"Cloud Drifts for Bella" is the result of an afternoon of ambient guitar improvisations made while watching Bella rest and the apartment was quiet. I wanted to make something that would soothe our respective souls, something light, melodic, sweet - like Bella. Of course, there are moments of melancholy and minor key reflections present as well. (Such is life.)

When sitting zazen, Bella would often sit beside me in perfect, contented silence. The prayer bowl sounds were added to honor that lesson from her.

And when creating the final arrangement, the piece told me it wanted to be a long-form ambient meditation, 16 minutes long. One minute of sound for each year of her precious life.

You blessed us, our dear Bella Boo, Bella Blue Cheese, Bella Button Lint . . . there will never be enough CowBella in the final mix. We miss you.
