about

The second half of 2020 was particularly tumultuous and disorienting, which perhaps already reads as numbingly cliche now that we’re well into 2021. My loved ones and I are certainly no exception to the challenges of our contemporary world, even with some glimmers of hope in the distance.

I don’t typically consider myself a “dark drone” artist, but this collection of pieces undoubtedly lends itself to that notion, both in sound and inspiration. There are many layers of murky distortion and textural obfuscation throughout, but I hope occasional moments of some release and quietude can be felt as well.

Each piece evolved from -- and was named for -- the month in which I made the original sketch for it. They came together later on in the year in an organically chronological way. Some are reflections on overtly external political and environmental upheavals (happening in some cases literally outside of our front door), and others were inspired by deeply difficult personal losses, struggles, and introspection. (But, really, there is no interior without exterior nor the political without the personal, is there?)

The final piece, November Now (Dayenu), is deliberately (a little bit) more spacious and melodic and is meant to bring some light into the preceding “darkness”. The word Dayenu comes from an ancient Jewish song traditionally sung during Passover. It roughly means “it would have been enough”. It celebrates all of the gifts that were granted during times of hardship by praising that even if there had been but a single blessing offered, it would have been enough.

As dark as these times have been for so many, there are still moments of light everyday -- if we open ourselves to see them.

about

Noctilusense Seattle, Washington

I'm a Seattle-based music producer, and Noctilusense is my musical alias. My current sound is a combination of soft synths, processing, and ambient guitar exploring textures and overlapping tonal layers. Usually slowly evolving and sometimes static. Frequently liminal and melancholic. Occasionally romantic but never sentimental. ... more
