". . . und Unordnung die andere Hälfte" was begun in an effort to quickly make and release something for Drone Day, May 30th, 2020.

That morning here in Seattle started off in a very dark, gloomy, and rainy way (just the way I usually prefer it), so I made some field recordings of the early morning rumble of the thunder and heavy rain mixed with a little light traffic. I thought that would make a great base layer to treat sonically and turn into a drone piece.
But, as it turned out, storms were rolling through Puget Sound that day in ways other than just the weather report.
That weekend also began a series of intense protests here in Seattle in response to the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police on May 25th. By the next day (the 31st) some of the protest marches had made their way past our apartment, where we witnessed lines of militarized officers and vehicles blocking our road while demonstrators passed by with their hands in the air chanting, "Hands up! Don't Shoot!". It was quite unnerving to witness.
Over the next couple of weeks, some of the protests and clashes with police intensified, and given our closeness to the epicenter of the demonstrations, our evenings were filled with the constant sound of circling helicopters low overhead. I normally love the sound of any flying machines, but knowing what they were tracking I came to dread them hovering over us.
However, I also felt compelled to capture the sounds, so I made several recordings of the din of traffic, helicopters, and sirens that felt constant in those ensuing nights.
The thunderstorms and helicopter recordings were treated, warped, and stretched into layers of noisy textures that formed the basis for ". . . und Unordnung die andere Hälfte". The title comes from the German proverb (attributed to theologian Martin Luther) "Ordnung ist das halbe Leben und Unordnung die andere Hälfte", meaning "Order is half of life, and disorder the other half".
These are indeed days of disorder.
